Binghamton, NY – On the second day of the SUNYAC Women's Tennis Championships, the Red Dragons found themselves in a semifinal matchup versus its East Division rival from New Paltz.
The Hawks were too much for SUNY Oneonta as they were shutout 5-0. After a very emotional win the previous evening against Brockport, the Red Dragons tried to find some more magic, but could not match the consistency and power of the New Paltz lineup.
In the doubles portion of the competition the highpoint came from the number one flighted team of seniors
Brynn Sussman (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) and
Michelle Spencer (Homer/Homer) who fought hard, putting a scare into their opponent. Down 3-6 in the match, they broke serve twice and eventually fought back to even the score at 7-7. Ultimately the Hawks did break back on the Red Dragons serve to go up 8-7 and eventually closed out the match winning 9-7.
In the singles stanza, the Red Dragons simply ran out of gas and succumbed to the powerful Hawks and could not threaten their potent lineup. Sussman did manage to stay tight with her opponent in the first set of her match at number one singles when play was suspended with the score tied 4-4.
The loss ended the Red Dragons fall season, but they exceeded expectations advancing to the semifinals of the year end tournament. Oneonta will now go into the offseason before resuming play in early 2015 with its non-traditional season, playing several matches in Florida beginning the week of March 9
th.
