Brockport senior John Ivy converted an old fashioned three-point play with 2.7 seconds on the clock to lift his Golden Eagles to an 81-79 win tonight against SUNY Oneonta. The final three points capped a 30-point performance, as Brockport remained undefeated in the SUNYAC at 7-0 while raising its overall record to 13-1. The loss for the Red Dragons evens them out at 8-8 overall while remaining a game over .500 in the conference at 5-4.
Ivy's layup was set up when Bobby Bell was able to tip the ball away from
Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) where Ivy collected it and charged for the basket.
The late game heroics were necessary after Oneonta sophomore,
Jack Dignan (Brewster/Brewster), made three free throws with 30 seconds to go in the game when he was fouled on a three-point attempt. Dignan stepped to the line with his team trailing 78-76. The lead for the Red Dragons was only the third time in the game that they held the lead, as they battled all night long.
Oneonta by 10 points twice during the second half. The Red Dragons came all the way back to take a 52-51 lead on a layup by freshman
Grant Massaroni (Rotterdam/Mohonasen) at the 12:45 mark.
The Golden Eagles quickly countered with a 15-4 run over the next three minutes to push its lead back to 10 points. All 15 points in the run came from long distance, as Brockport made five, three-point shots.
Oneonta bounced back with a 15-5 run to tie the contest at 71 apiece with 4:31 left in the game. Senior
Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) buried a deep three-pointer to tie the score.
A 7-1 spurt by Brockport pushed its lead back to six points with 1:47 to go. Senior Patrick Coyle scored four points during the run before fouling out with 12 points and seven boards.
Mager and freshman
Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) both made a pair of free throws to pull the Red Dragons to 78-76.
The opening seven minutes of the game were played closely between the two squads. Brockport was able to open up a 12-point lead with 3:08 remaining in the first half. The Red Dragons battled back, and a layup by McElroy as time expired got Oneonta to the locker room trailing only 39-35.
Mager led Oneonta with 19 points while McElroy and sophomore
Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) each scored 16 points.
