Men's basketball tripped up by SUNY Geneseo

The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting SUNY Geneseo squad this afternoon, as they fell to the Blue Knights 83-68.  The loss for the Red Dragons drops them to a game below the .500 mark to 8-9 overall and 5-5 in the SUNYAC while Geneseo raises its record to 13-2 overall and 7-1 in conference play.

The Blue Knights finished the game shooting 55 percent from the floor (30-55) and had three players reach double figures.  Senior Connor Fedge led all scorers in the game with 27 points, which included 11-of-13 from the charity stripe.  Junior Gordon Lyons contributed 21 points on 10-for-13 shooting, and senior Thomas Decker added 11 points.

Oneonta was led by freshman Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs), who scored 20 points while grabbing a team high eight boards.  Junior Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) contributed 10 points and six rebounds.

Oneonta made a couple of runs in the second half after trailing 44-38 at the break.  A McElroy three-point play at the 17:07 mark of the second half got the Red Dragons to within three points at 49-46.  Geneseo countered with a 15-1 run over the next five minutes to push its lead to 17 points at 64-47.

Oneonta made one final push over the next four minutes and a three-pointer by McElroy closed the gap to 70-58 with 8:19 remaining in the contest.  The Blue Knights answered back with 11 unanswered points to take its largest lead of the game at 81-58 with 4:43 to go.

Oneonta came out with a hot hand early in the game, as they jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the first two minutes.  The Red Dragons pushed it to seven points on a three by senior Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) at the 14:27 mark.

Geneseo battled back to take a 19-18 lead on a layup by James McKenna.  The Red Dragons countered with six unanswered to gain the lead back at 24-19 with 7:13 to go in the opening half.

After Geneseo came back to tie the game at 24 apiece, the two teams exchanged the lead for a few minutes before the Blue Knights pulled away for a six-point halftime advantage.

Oneonta will be at Plattsburgh for their next contest this upcoming Friday night beginning at 8pm.
