The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team opened its 2013 SUNYAC schedule at home today with a 2-1 win against The College at Brockport. Freshman
Anna Torri (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) scored the eventual game-winner in the 62nd minute of play to lift the Red Dragons to the victory.
Oneonta (6-2) outshot Brockport (4-3) 12-2, as they carried the momentum for most of the contest.
The Red Dragons pressured early, as they registered three shots in the opening three minutes of the game. Freshman goalie, Lindsay Farrell, made all three stops for the Golden Eagles to keep the game scoreless. Farrell would finish the game with eight saves.
Oneonta broke the tie in the 18th minute on an odd player break into Brockport's end of the field. Sophomore
Sara Rattigan (Stormville/Carmel) carried the ball across to the left side of the circle and attempted to direct the ball at the goal where it was picked out of the air by junior
Andrea Day (Greene/Greene), who knocked it home for the 1-0 lead.
The momentum shifted a bit at the beginning of the second half, as Brockport began to carry the play in the Oneonta end of the field. The Golden Eagles got the equalizer in the 45th minute off a penalty corner, as senior Madison Buckley used a reverse stick to knock home a pass from classmate Molly Hurd.
Torri's game-winner was a blast from the top of the circle that Farrell never had a chance to stop.
Oneonta will host SUNY Geneseo tomorrow beginning at 1pm. The Blue Knights tripped up defending SUNYAC champion, New Paltz, 2-1 on the road today.
