Women's Lacrosse defeats Potsdam 16-10

Sophomore Jillian Donodeo scores five goals

Box Score Oneonta, N.Y. – The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team picked up a 16-10 victory against visiting SUNY Potsdam today in their first of five consecutive home games. Sophomore Jillian Donodeo (Holbrook/Sachem East) led the attack with five goals, as the Red Dragons raised its overall record to 6-5 and are now 2-2 in the SUNYAC.
 
Junior Chelsea Collins (St. James/Smithtown East) got the Red Dragons off to a quick start scoring unassisted just 11 seconds into the game. Donodeo followed suit for her first of the afternoon on a Collins assist less than two minutes later.
 
Potsdam (4-5/1-2) answered back with an unassisted goal by senior Whitney Boshart, cutting the lead to 2-1.
 
The Red Dragons and the Bears traded goals before Oneonta put two more on the board to take a 5-2 lead with goals by Casey Sarle (West Islip/West Islip) and Donodeo. Potsdam responded with two goals by Michelle Varney to get the game to 5-4.
 
The two teams would once again each score a goal to end the half.  The Red Dragons took the lead into the halftime break, 6-5.
 
Donodeo started the second half off with a goal 27 seconds into play and Potsdam's Margaret Wall scored less than two minutes later to keep the game at a one goal advantage for Oneonta. The game broke open when Oneonta put three on the board in a four minute time span starting with a Sarle free position shot. Donodeo and senior Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy), the team's leader in goals, finished off the scoring spree.
 
Potsdam got as close as 11-9, 12:22 into the second half, but some key turnovers allowed Oneonta to push the game out of reach scoring 5 more goals and allowing one in the last 15 minutes of the game.
 
The Red Dragons outshot the Bears 40-19 and had a 15-12 advantage in draw controls.
 
Sarle scored 4 goals on the afternoon and Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport) and Tulley each had 3. Collins provided 3 assists.
 
Oneonta will be in action again this Saturday when they host SUNYAC rival Fredonia beginning at 2:30 p.m.
