Wrestlers take care of RIT in season finale 34-12

The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team finished up its dual-match schedule for the season today at home with a convincing 34-12 victory against visiting RIT.  The win for Oneonta gives them an 8-11 record for the year in dual matches while RIT drops to 2-13.

After forfeiting its opening match at 125 lbs., Oneonta came back to win the next two weights.  Junior Ben Mikac (Williamsville/Williamsville East) recorded a 10-4 decision over Rory Bruce before junior Sean Hanson (Lorraine/South Jefferson) pinned Lucas Howland to give the Red Dragons a 9-6 lead.

RIT's Barry Mayville then pinned Kyle Wierzbicki (Warwick/Warwick Valley) of Oneonta to give the lead back to the Tigers at 12-9.  The scoring for RIT would end at that point, as Oneonta assumed control of the match by winning the final six weight classes.

Junior Dan Graff (LaGrangeville/Arlington) got Oneonta even with a hard fought 2-0 decision against Sean Sercu.

The final five winners for Oneonta were freshman Shaun Gillen (Bohemia/Connetquot) at 165 lbs., sophomore Anthony Paratore (Nanuet/Nanuet) at 174 lbs., Greg Du Vall (Sherburne/Sherburne Earlville) at 184 lbs., junior Chad Obzud (Cohoes/Lansingburgh) at 197 lbs., and junior Jake Smith (St. James/Smithtown) at 285 lbs.  Du Vall's win was a pin against Collin Doane.

Oneonta will now have wrestle-offs to determine which 10 athletes will compete in two weeks at the NCAA Northeast Regional championships at WPI.  This will be the qualifying tournament for the Red Dragons, as the NCAA has adopted a new regional format to determine qualifiers for the Division III championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Mar. 15-16.  The top three finishers in each weight class will automatically qualify for the championships.  There will no longer be any wild card selections.
