Field Hockey opens 2012 with convincing win

Senior Suzanne Wright scores two goals

Box Score

UTICA, N.Y.—Senior Suzanne Wright (Hudson/Germantown Central) scored a pair of goals in leading the SUNY Oneonta field hockey team to a season opening 5-1 victory over St. Lawrence University today at Utica College.  Wright also added an assist on Oneonta's final goal of the afternoon to give her five points to start the year.  The Red Dragons blew open a 1-0 lead with four goals in the second half before surrendering a late goal to the Saints.  Oneonta outshot St. Lawrence 17-12 while holding a 13-7 advantage in penalty corners.

The game remained scoreless until the 23rd minute of play when Oneonta capitalized on one of its corners to take a 1-0 lead.  After the ball was moved around the circle, junior Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) drove a shot passed the Saints goalie for the first goal of the game.  Senior Ashley Johnson (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) assisted on the goal and added two more helpers on the next two goals for Oneonta.

Whatever halftime adjustments were made seemed to work as Oneonta tallied four goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half to put the game out of reach.  Wright scored the first of her two goals just over two minutes into the second half with an assist from Johnson.

After a goal by sophomore Andrea Day (Greene/Greene), Wright made it 4-0 in favor of the Red Dragons in the 48th minute with an assist from Day.  Sophomore Kelcy Forbragd (Camden/Camden) notched the final goal for the Red Dragons in the 51st minute.

All three goalies played in the game for Oneonta and combined for eight saves on the day.  Starter Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) made three saves, sophomore Emma Wasserman (High Falls/Rondout Valley) made four stops and freshman Krista Servedio (Shrub Oak/Lakeland) made one save.

Oneonta will be at Utica College again tomorrow against the College of Wooster beginning at 11am.
