Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball falls short at home versus Skidmore

SUNY Oneonta sophomore Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) had an open look at the buzzer, but the shot hit the front of the rim as the game ended with the Red Dragons coming up short tonight at home versus Skidmore 66-63.  The Thoroughbreds overcame a four-point halftime deficit and shot 50 percent in the second half to leave town with the victory.

Oneonta (1-5) had four players in double figures tonight led by Mager and freshman Jack Dignan (Brewster/Brewster), who each scored 14 points.  Junior Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) and freshman Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) each scored 13 points in the game.

After shooting 50 percent in the first half including hitting 5-of-10 from behind the arc, Skidmore (5-1) opened the second half with a 14-5 run to gain the lead 50-45.  They never trailed again and led by as many as nine points on a lay up by Eric Lowry at the 9:55 mark.

Oneonta made a run at Skidmore and cut their lead to a pair on a basket by Zuvic with 6:38 to go, as the score was 60-58 in favor of the Thoroughbreds.

Six unanswered points by Skidmore over the next five minutes gave them a comfortable lead before Mager buried a three to make the score 66-61 with just over a minute to play.

A turnover by Skidmore led to a Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) basket at the other end for Oneonta, which made the score 66-63.  A missed jumper at the other end gave Oneonta the ball for the last shot.  They called a timeout with five seconds remaining to set up the final play.

Aldin Medunjanin and Connor Merrill, who scored 22 and 21 points respectively, led Skidmore.

Oneonta will be at home for the weekend, as they host Geneseo on Friday and Brockport on Saturday in back-to-back SUNYAC contests.  Friday's game is scheduled for an 8pm tip off.
