Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball earns weekend split at Scranton

Zuvic and Mager lead Red Dragons in opening weekend

SCRANTON, PA – The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team shot lights out this afternoon in defeating the York (PA) Spartans, 92-77, in the consolation game of the Radisson Invitational hosted by the University of Scranton.  The win for Oneonta (1-1) earned them a weekend split to open the season.  Last night, the Red Dragons fell to host Scranton 63-55.

Oneonta shot 64 percent from the field in today's win including 59 percent from long range.  The Red Dragons hit 16-of-27 from three-point range, which included a perfect 5-of-5 from sophomore Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South).  Mager finished the game with 21 points and nine boards after putting in 14 points and grabbing 16 rebounds last night versus Scranton.  His two-game performance earned him All-Tournament honors.

Making his debut in a big way this weekend was freshman Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) who had back-to-back games of 21 and 22 points to lead Oneonta.  Today, he scored 22 points in 24 minutes, as he hit 10-of-13 shots from the field.

Oneonta led by as many as 12 points in the first half, as they took a 51-44 lead into halftime.  In the second half, the Red Dragons built its lead to 17 points on a basket by Zuvic at the 9:13 mark, which put Oneonta ahead 80-63.

In addition to Zuvic and Mager, junior Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) and sophomore Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) reached double figures with 12 points and 14 points respectively.  Kelly also added 12 assists to become the first player since 1979 to dish out that many assists in a game.

In last night's loss to Scranton, Oneonta had a 32-28 lead at halftime, but only hit 8-of-28 shots in the second half in the eight point loss.  The Red Dragons only went to the foul line seven times opposed to 28 times for the hosts.  Despite hitting all seven, the Royals made 21 from the charity stripe.

Zuvic and Mager were the only Red Dragons in double figures in the contest.

Oneonta will not be in action again until Wednesday, Nov. 28 when they will open its home schedule against city rival Hartwick.  Tip-off is scheduled for 8pm.
