In a battle for city bragging rights between the two College Presidents, it was the SUNY Oneonta volleyball team that came out on top of Hartwick College tonight 3-1. Tonight's match was the third annual Presidential Match, this year hosted by Oneonta.
Oneonta (19-12) never trailed in the opening set en route to a 25-21 win. The Red Dragons led by as many as eight points before Hartwick (12-16) battled back to pull within two points at 23-21.
In the second set, Hartwick scored the opening point, but that was its only lead, as Oneonta won the set easily 25-13.
The third set was close throughout with eight ties and six lead changes. The last lead change came at 19-18 in favor of the Hawks, as the won the third set 25-20 to force a fourth set.
The two squads battled again in the fourth set with neither team holding more than a two-point lead until the end when Oneonta won 25-22. With the score tied at 20-20, Oneonta scored three unanswered to create some breathing room. Hartwick got it back to 24-22 and had the serve, but the match ended on a
Brittany Calvello (Gloversville/Broadalbin-Perth) kill, as Oneonta took the victory.
Senior
Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) led Oneonta with 12 kills. Calvello had 17 assists and 12 digs in the match. Junior
Kristina Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) led the defense with 17 digs.
Oneonta will close out the regular season this Saturday at home when they host the Dig Pink Invitational. All Funds raised will go towards breast cancer education and research. Fans are asked to wear pink to the matches in support of the effort.
Oneonta will play two matches, one at noon versus Sage College and one at 2pm versus CCNY. The matches will take place in the Chase Gymnasium.
