Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball falls short at Plattsburgh

Freshman Frankie Kelly scores 16 points

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Oneonta State men's basketball surged late, but couldn't overtake host Plattsburgh, falling 67-64.  Freshman Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) led the Red Dragons with 16 points that included a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line.

Plattsburgh (7-12, 5-7 SUNYAC) snapped a five game losing streak tonight as they held off a resilient Oneonta (2-17, 1-11 SUNYAC) squad.

The Cardinals led by as many as 17, but had to survive a late push by the Red Dragons as Kevin Donahue (South Glens Falls/South High) missed a three point attempt at the buzzer.  Donohue reached double figures in the contest with 11 points.

Despite the Cardinals eight point lead at the break, Kelly scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half to keep the Red Dragons within touching distance until the final buzzer.

John Perez finished a spectacular alley-oop play with a dunk to put the Cardinals up by 17 with 14:17 remaining in the game. The Red Dragons would not go away as they outscored the Cardinals 31-16 over the final 14 minutes to get within two points.

Ezra Hodgson put away a free throw with eight seconds left to put the Cardinals back up by three and that is how the game would stay.

Perez and Shavar Fields both scored a game-high 20 points. Perez went 8-for-11 from the field and Fields shot 6-of-9. Ketema Brooks gave out six assists in the game to bring his career total to 363. Brooks is now seven assists away from tying the program's all-time record, which stands at 370.

The Cardinals shot 51.1 percent from the field for the game, while the Red Dragons shot 35.7 percent.

The Oneonta men will be in action again this Friday night at Geneseo for the first of back-to-back conference games this weekend.
