Volleyball advances past Buffalo State in SUNYAC tournament

Red Dragons face rival Cortland tomorrow at 3pm

The Oneonta State volleyball team got 21 kills and four blocks from junior Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) as they advanced past Buffalo State in the 2011 SUNYAC tournament being held at Cortland.  The Red Dragons, who are the No. 3 seed from the East Division, eliminated Buffalo State, who was the No. 2 seed from the West Division by a final of 3-1.  Oneonta will now play host Cortland at 3pm tomorrow in the semifinals.  The championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 2pm.

In the first set, the score was tied at 10-10 and 11-11 before Oneonta (18-19) took the lead for good at 12-11.  The Red Dragons were still up, 15-14, before going on 4-0 run en route to the 25-17 opening set victory.

In the second set, Oneonta gained a 10-9 lead before scoring six straight points to go up 16-9. Buffalo State battled back to get within 20-17, but Oneonta scored the next two points and went on to win 25-20.

With the teams deadlocked at 7-7 in the third set, the Bengals went on a 4-1 run to go up 11-8.  At 13-11, Buffalo State scored the next three points to go up 16-11. Oneonta fought back to within 20-18, but Buffalo State scored the next two points and leads by at least three the rest of the way, winning 25-20.

Buffalo State led early 3-0 and 6-3 before Oneonta put together a 9-1 run to go ahead 12-7.  The Red Dragons were still up 15-8 before Buffalo State made a run to get to within two points at 16-14.  Oneonta shuts the door with the next three points and closes out the set 25-17 to seal the match.

Junior Brittany Calvello (Gloversville/Broadalbin-Perth) (Gloversville/Broadalbin-Perth) fueled the offense with 41 assists while contributing 15 digs.  In the match, Calvello went over 1,000 assists for the season, which is a collegiate career first and only the second time in the last 16 years that the mark has been cracked.

Today's first round win for Oneonta was the first time since 2004 that they have advanced into the semifinals of the conference tournament.  That season they met Cortland in the semifinals and were defeated 3-1.
