The Oneonta State volleyball team fell to rival Cortland, 3-0, today in the SUNYAC tournament semifinals. Oneonta's season will come to an end at 18-20 overall while Cortland (38-1) advances to the championship match tomorrow at 2:00pm versus the winner of the Fredonia/New Paltz semifinal match.
The standout performance for Oneonta today came from sophomore
Erica Darpino (Endicott/Union-Endicott) (Endicott/Union Endicott), who finished the match with a team high eight kills and nine blocks.
In the opening set, the score was tied 10 times, the last at 20-20. With Oneonta leading 20-19, Cortland scored four straight points on two kills, a block and another kill to go up 23-20. Junior
Kacy Boburka's (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) kill cuts the deficit to 23-21, but Cortland scored the final two points on a kill and an error.
The second set was much the same with the two teams battling to 15 ties. Cortland led 23-20 before Oneonta came back to tie with a pair of blocks and a Cortland error. Oneonta led 25-24 after a block by senior
Stephanie Holt (Delanson/Duanesburg) (Delanson/Duanesburg) and
Bridget McHugh (New Hyde Park/Herricks) (New Hyde Park/Herricks Albertson), but Cortland recorded three straight kills to give them the 27-25 win.
Cortland led for most of the third set before Oneonta tied the score at 18-18. Oneonta took its first, and only, lead at 20-19 on a block by Darpino and
Brittany Calvello (Gloversville/Broadalbin-Perth) (Gloversville/Broadalbin Perth). Following a timeout, Cortland scored five straight points to go up 24-20 and won the set 25-21.
