The Putnam Valley connection of juniors,
Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) and
Megan Warning (Lake Peeksill/Putnam Valley), were at it tonight with two goals and an assist each as they paced Oneonta State field hockey to a 6-3 win against cross-city rival Hartwick College. The win for Oneonta has them at 11-5 overall while the loss drops the Hawks to 6-8 overall.
Earlier today the NCAA released its first regional rankings and Oneonta found itself at No. 5 in the North Atlantic Region. Oneonta has played three of the four teams ahead of them with a game this Saturday versus the fourth team, Rensselaer. Oneonta did not win any of the previous three contests against any of the teams they've played, so a win at Rensselaer on Saturday will be important for next week's rankings.
Hartwick got on the scoreboard first tonight with an unassisted goal in the second minute by junior Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA). Kimble was able to dribble into the circle and pulled the ball around Oneonta goalie,
Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) (Liverpool/Liverpool), before putting the ball in the goal. Kimble would score again in the 49th minute when she converted a penalty stroke to cut Oneonta's lead to 4-2.
Less than three minutes later, freshman
Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) (Greene/Greene) tied the score for the Red Dragons with an assist from Warning. Warning passed the ball into the circle where Day deflected the ball by Hartwick goalie, Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA).
Oneonta took a 3-1 lead into halftime on the strength of a pair of unassisted goals. Morgan scored in the ninth minute while Warning scored in the 29th minute.
Junior
Suzanne Wright (Hudson/Germantown Central) (Hudson/Germantown Central) notched her second goal of the season early in the second half to give Oneonta a 4-1 lead.
Alicia Flewelling (Queensbury) brought Hartwick close at 4-3 in the 59th minute off an assist from Abby Wentlent (Greene).
Morgan and Warning shut the door with back-to-back goals in the 61st and 64th minutes respectively.
