Volleyball clinches SUNYAC tournament spot

Red Dragons complete 3-1 weekend

ONEONTA, N.Y.—The SUNY Oneonta women's volleyball team went 3-1 over the weekend in the final SUNYAC East Division pool play weekend hosted by SUNY Potsdam. With its performance, Oneonta (14-17) finished 5-3 in conference play and qualified for the SUNYAC tournament as the No. 3 seed from the East Division. Oneonta will play Geneseo, the No. 2 seed from the West Division on Thursday, Nov. 4 at Fredonia in the opening round of the six-team, three-day event hosted by Fredonia, who went 8-0 in the West Division.

Cortland, 7-1, and New Paltz, 6-2, finished ahead of Oneonta in the East standings to earn the top two seeds respectively.

After sweeping Potsdam in its opening match on Friday, the Red Dragons defeated New Paltz for the first time since 2005, 3-1. Sophomore Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) (Binghamton) led three players, who recorded double digits in kills, with 18. Senior Kelsey Klopfer (Baldwinsville/Baldwinsville) (Baldwinsville) fueled the attack with 27 assists. Junior Jessica Zerega (New City) and sophomore Brittany Calvello (Gloversville/Broadalbin-Perth) (Gloversville) led the defense with 30 and 24 digs respectively. For Zerega, it was the first time in her career that she registered at least 30 digs in a match.

In its first match on Saturday, Oneonta jumped out to a 2-0 lead before falling in five sets to Cortland. Calvello had 12 kills and 16 assists to lead Oneonta.

Oneonta finished its day with a 3-1 win against Plattsburgh.

Oneonta will be home on Tuesday night against Union for a match beginning at 6:00 p.m.
