Field hockey nipped by Cortland 3-2 in overtime

Senior Ainsley Stoll scores a pair in defeat

ONEONTA, N.Y.—SUNY Oneonta senior Ainsley Stoll (Williamsville/Williamsville North) (Williamsville) scored a pair of goals today, but it was not enough as rival SUNY Cortland defeated the hosts 3-2 in overtime. Stoll's second goal of the game came in the 67th minute to tie the score and send the game into the extra period. In the opening period of overtime, Cortland sophomore Sara Woodward scored the game-winner off a rebound in the 77th minute to give the visitors the victory.

Today's loss for Oneonta (9-6/2-4 SUNYAC) eliminates them from a playoff spot due to tiebreakers with Morrisville and Brockport, who they tied with for the final spot in the tournament. Cortland's win (12-1/5-1 SUNYAC locks up second place for the conference tournament the first weekend in November at regular season champion, Geneseo.

Cortland got on the scoreboard first in today's game in the 15th minute of play. Senior Brianna Yetsko dribbled around and Oneonta defender and put a shot into the left corner of the goal.

Oneonta came right back three minutes later and capitalized off a penalty corner where Stoll took the pass in from junior Jacqueline Camp (Queensbury) and blasted a shot by the Cortland goalie.

Cortland held a 15-3 shot advantage through the opening half of play, but the two teams went into halftime knotted at 1-1.

Freshman Skyler Nuccio gave Cortland the 2-1 lead just four minutes into the second half, scoring off of a rebound of an Erin Smith shot.

Stoll's tying goal came off a flurry of penalty corners where the hosts turned up the pressure trying to get the equalizer. Stoll got the pass in from Camp and passed it across to sophomore Ashley Johnson (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) (Saratoga Springs), who then returned it to Stoll, who one-timed it to the back of the cage.

Leslie Dauphinais (Harpursville/Harpursville) (Harpursville) made 12 saves today in goal for Oneonta while her counterpart, Ashley Hughes, made just one save.

Next up for Oneonta is city rival Hartwick as the two will do battle this coming Tuesday evening beginning at 7:00 p.m.
