SUNY Oneonta Wins Pair on Day 1 of SUNYAC Pool Play

Red Dragons sweep Potsdam and Cortland

     The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team made it a clean sweep against both Potsdam and Cortland today in the opening day of SUNYAC East Pool Play hosted by Oneonta. The Red Dragons are now 7-9 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC with two matches left tomorrow against New Paltz and Plattsburgh.
     In the opening against Potsdam it was freshman Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) who led the attack with 13 kills. Junior Kelsey Klopfer (Baldwinsville/Baldwinsville) fueled the attack with 10 assists.
     In the second match of the day against its rival Cortland, the hosts took control early en route to the 3-0 win. Boburka was huge again leading Oneonta with 12 kills and three blocks. Sophomore Jessica Zerega (New City/Clarkstown) led the defense with 15 digs.
     The win against Cortland was its first since the 2006 season when Oneonta defeated Cortland during the first pool play weekend at New Paltz. Prior to 2006, Oneonta had defeated Cortland during the 2002 season when Oneonta was the SUNYAC champion and qualified for the NCAA tournament. That year they defeated its rival three times inlcuding in the championship match of the conference tournament.
     The Red Dragons will begin its day tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. against New Paltz and will conclude its Saturday with a match against Plattsburgh at 2:00 p.m.
