SUNY Oneonta Wins Scotty Wood Tournament

Red Dragons off to 2-0 start

     Senior #Michael Grimes (Albany/Catholic Central)#  a game high 16 points to lead three players in double figures as SUNY Oneonta defeated William Paterson 56-53 in the championship game of the Scotty Wood Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg. Grimes was selected as the MVP of the tournament as he averaged 12 points and 7.5 rebounds during the two-day event.
     Yesterday, Oneonta defeated host Muhlenberg 72-58 behind 19 points by junior #Brian Hooks (Cohoes/Shaker)#, who led four Red Dragons in double figures. Hooks, who was selected to the All-Tournament team, hit a career high six three pointers in the win against the Mules.
     Senior #Brian Beckford (Brooklyn/Christ the King)# was also selected to the All-Tournament Team for Oneonta as he 10 points and six rebounds including pulling down a game high nine boards in the championship game.
     In last night's game, Oneonta pulled away midway through the second half en route to its win. Senior #Kevin Walsh (Middletown/Minisink Valley)# and junior #Shane Gillette (Hurley/Kingston)# rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 and 11 points respectively.
     In today's game, the Red Dragons overcame a nine point first half deficit to take a to tie the score early in the second half. They regained the lead at the 13:29 mark on a pair of free throws by Grimes before opening up a seven point lead less than eight minutes to go in the contest.
     William Paterson battled back to tie the score at 53 apiece at 4:04 before Beckford made a lay up to give the Red Dragons the lead for good. Both teams went cold down the stretch and Grimes added one more free throw for good measure. William Paterson had one last shot to tie the game and the ball went in-and-out for the final of 56-53.
     SUNY Oneonta will be in action again this coming Tuesday when it travels to Ithaca for a contest beginning at 8:00 p.m.
