Catan rejoins the Oneonta coaching staff in 2023 after 10+ years teaching professional tennis. Catan previously coached at Oneonta in 2019-20. Prior to this teaching career, he played professional tennis in numerous satellite tournaments and achieved a world ranking by earning an ATP point. In his best season as a four year varsity starter in high school, he went undefeated at first singles his senior year.Â
Catan’s teaching career started at the Point Set Indoor Racquet Club in Oceanside, New York, working with students from beginners to highly ranked junior players. Many students went on to enjoy and play tennis at all levels in college. His teaching credentials as a member of the United States Professional Tennis Association was a level one, this being considered the highest level that can be granted by the USPTA. Later he became the head pro at the Seawane County Club in Hewlett Harbor, New York with a full line pro shop and two assistant pro’s.
While at the club, Catan competed in numerous Satellite and national tournaments attempting to break into the main tennis tour. After 10 years of competitive tennis he pursued a career in banking at a local upstate bank in New York, rising to the level of Senior Vice President in charge of the consumer lending department.
Catan has lived in the Oneonta community for the past 13 years with his wife Michelle and their 10-year old triplets. His daughters, Reilly and Mackenzie compete as competitive gymnasts for the Oneonta YMCA, as well as, many other competitive sports. His son Christopher is starting his tennis career and has competed at two 12 and under tournaments to date. He is also active in many other competitive sports as well.
