John grew up in New York’s Capital District, and moved to Oneonta in 1980 where he has been a leading community member for over 30 years. Hayen has head coaching experience with the Oneonta Soccer Club, where he is a valuable figurehead in the organization. He is a sports enthusiast, and besides doing the local radio commentary on high school sports, he is a feature on the radio sports news where his signature piece is baiting the Yankee fans!

John and his wife Sue have been married now for 30 years.  They have two daughters, Amber and Jarrin, and a son Chris. After earning first-team All-State honors as a goalkeeper at Oneonta High School, Chris developed into an integral member of the Division 1 Binghamton University Men's Soccer Team, where he was a 4-year player and a 3-year starting goalkeeper. Amber is an alumni of O-State with degree in elementary Education and is currently teaching in the Albany area. Jarrin lives in Oneonta and works on campus at SUNY Oneonta.
