SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The Oneonta men's soccer team trailed in their road match before recording two goals in the second half to defeat Skidmore, 2-1, Tuesday evening. Graduate student
Iyare Harris (Kingston, NY/Kingston) tied the match for Oneonta in the 49th minute, then sophomore
Jack Bochenski (Eastchester, NY/Eastchester) scored the game-winner in the 56th minute. Bochenski also assisted Harris on his goal, while graduate student
Milton Mancias Magana (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) assisted on both the team's goals. The win improved the Red Dragons record to 6-0-1 overall, and the Thoroughbreds dropped to 2-3-2 this season.Â
"Another tough road win," said Head Coach
Iain Byrne. "There were chances at both ends, and really the game could have ended 5-5!"
Senior keeper
James Cintron (Poughkeepsie, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) made a couple of stops within the first 19 minutes of play to keep the match scoreless. In the 22nd minute, Oneonta was called for a hand ball inside the penalty area, and Skidmore was awarded a penalty kick. Colin Goodhines took the kick for the Thoroughbreds and scored for a 1-0 lead.
Before the end of the first half, the Red Dragons had a free kick where senior
Adrian Matute (Islip, NY/Islip) placed a header on net, but the keeper made the stop to maintain the one-goal edge.
In the moment leading up to Oneonta's first goal, Cintron had another huge save on Goodhines' shot from a free kick in the 48th minute.
The Red Dragons found the equalizer in the 49th minute. Bochenski gathered the ball off a pass from senior
Erik Popp (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay), and he passed it to Mancias Magana. Mancias Magana then sent a no-look behind the back pass to Iy. Harris at the top of the penalty box, who on his second touch fired the ball into the low left side of the net for the goal.
Oneonta had a chance to take the lead in the 50th and 55th minute with a shot on goal from graduate student
Zach Rabadi (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) and Iy. Harris, but Skidmore's goalie saved both. The Thoroughbreds were threatening to score in the 56th minute, but the Red Dragons' backline blocked them from getting a shot off and cleared the ball away.
Following the stop, Oneonta went on the counterattack for the game-winner in the 57th minute. Rabadi sent a lead pass towards Mancias Magana. The Red Dragon winger controlled the ball and sent a low centering pass that slipped through the keeper's hands and to the back post, where Bochenski came sliding in to score the goal.
Cintron made another key save in the 68th minute when Jed Dougherty zipped one towards the net and forced the Red Dragon to dive and punch it away.
Seniors
Imari Harris (Kingston, NY/Kingston) and
Derek Jaramillo (Mahopac, NY/Lakeland) both had an opportunity to extend the team's lead, though Skidmore's Rowan McLear blocked each shot. Mancias Magana had a shot to make it 3-1 in the 74th, but was stopped, then again in the 86th when McLear was away from the net, however the Red Dragon missed it just above the crossbar.
Cintron finished the game with five saves for Oneonta.
McLear totaled six stops in net for Skidmore. Goodhines recorded three shots on goal.
Oneonta outshot Skidmore 17-12 in total shots, 8-6 in shots on net, while the Thoroughbreds had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Red Dragons are back on the pitch on Saturday, September 26, when they travel to take on Rutgers-Newark at 1 pm.
