Men’s Tennis Finishes Season with 7-0 WIAC Shutout Against Rutgers-Camden

EWING, NJ. -- The Oneonta men's tennis team finished their season off with an exclamation point, sweeping Rutgers-Camden for a 7-0 WIAC shutout win Saturday morning. The Red Dragons won all three doubles matches then they only dropped a combined five games in singles play as they swept the Raptors in straight sets. Senior William Schmid (Yonkers/Salesian HS), junior Chris Chippari (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), and sophomores, Ryan Geller (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y./Cornwall), Peter Pitaleff (Garrison, N.Y./Highland Falls Fort Montgomery) and Jaden Ritterman (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) all walked away with victories in doubles and singles play. Senior Nate Inzerillo (Center Moriches/Center Moriches) ended his career with a win in singles play.  

"Great way to end the season with a very dominate conference win for our guys," Head Coach Brian Roser commented. "We only dropped six games total the whole match in a great team effort." 

The Red Dragons started the match strong by winning all three doubles courts. Schmid and Chippari defeated Max Cabida and Julian Pinder on court one, 6-1, while Pitaleff and Ritterman bageled Isan Salamanca and Ben Try on court two, 6-0. Chippari and Schmid finished the season 10-9 as Oneonta's top duo. Schmid totaled 38 career doubles victories. Pitaleff and Ritterman ended the year 9-10 as the team's number two duo. Geller and freshman Amine Abidi (Casablanca, Morocco/John A .Coleman Catholic) won court three by forfeit for their second win as a pair, and Geller's sixth doubles win this season.

"Seniors Will Schmid and Nate Inzerillo (Center Moriches/Center Moriches) finished up their careers with great wins today," Coach Roser continued. "Nate had a decisive win at fifth singles, and Will continued his solid play in both doubles and singles, only dropping one point in his entire singles match. Congratulations to both of them on their collegiate careers."

Schmid won his final singles match in double bagel style on court two against Try, 6-0, 6-0. The Red Dragon senior was unstoppable, only dropping one point in the entire singles match. Schmid finished the season 11-10 in singles play and 38-39 in his career.

Inzerillo dismantled Salamanca on court five for his final singles win. He bageled his Raptor opponent in the first set, then cruised in the second set for a 6-0, 6-1 final. Inzerillo ended his senior year 7-8 in singles play, while he capped off his career with a 13-17 record in singles play and 11 doubles wins.

Chippari bested Cabida on court one with a bagel in the first set for a 6-0, 6-2, win to finish his junior year with seven singles wins on the top court. Ritterman blanked Pinder on court three for a 6-0, 6-0 victory, and ended his sophomore campaign with eight wins in singles play.

Pitaleff recorded a bagel set against John Brady, handling the Raptor on court four for a 6-2, 6-0, final. The Oneonta sophomore finished his sophomore season with nine victories in singles. Geller won court six by forfeit for his fifth singles win this year.

Today was the final match for Inzerillo, Schmid, and Braden Greenberg (Northport, N.Y./Northport). Greenberg finished his senior season 2-0 in singles, ending his Red Dragon career 14-12 in singles play and 2-3 in doubles.

"The rest of us look forward to building off this season as we join the Empire 8 next year and look to win a conference championship and earn a bid to the NCAA tournament," Coach Roser concluded.

With the win, Oneonta ended the season with an overall record of 10-11, which included eight shutouts, and 1-1 in WIAC play.
