Red Dragons Sweep Broncos in Home Finale, 7-0

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta men's tennis team recorded their seventh shutout of the season, dominating SUNY Delhi, 7-0, in the team's final home match of the season Wednesday afternoon at Dr. Heissan '63 Tennis Courts. The Red Dragons overpowered the Broncos on each court, sweeping the doubles matches before winning each single court in straight sets. Seniors William Schmid (Yonkers/Salesian HS), Nate Inzerillo (Center Moriches/Center Moriches) and freshman Amine Abidi (Casablanca, Morocco/John A .Coleman Catholic) all won in doubles and singles play. Junior Seth Cheung (Somers, N.Y./Somers) recorded his first collegiate singles win, while Abidi secured his first singles win with the team. The victory improved Oneonta's record to 9-10 this season while Delhi dropped to 4-8 overall.

"Very happy we were able to take the match today 7-0 with ease," said Head Coach Brian Roser. "Looking forward to carrying this momentum into the weekend for conference play."

Oneonta started the match by winning all three doubles courts. Schmid and Inzerillo paired up on the No. 1 court and defeated Ben Andersen and Nicholas Vanhouten, 6-1. Abidi teamed up with junior Chris Chippari (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and shutout Moses Rojas and Gavin Bonczkowski on court three, 6-0. The sophomore duo of Peter Pitaleff (Garrison, N.Y./Highland Falls Fort Montgomery) and Jaden Ritterman (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) capped off the doubles sweep and earned their eighth win as a team with a 6-4 victory against Nolan Kleinsasser and Devin Guerrieri on court two.

The Red Dragons continued the strong play into singles matches and cruised to a victory on all six courts. Schmid bested Kleinsasser with a pair of bagels, 6-0, 6-0, on the No. 1 court for his 10th singles win this season. Inzerillo secured his sixth singles victory of the year with a 6-0, 6-2 win on court two over Vanhouten.

"Sean Lippman (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and Jake Mayola (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) did a good job getting wins today, being back in the starting lineup," Coach Roser continued.

Sophomore Sean Lippman (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) recorded a bagel set in his second set as he beat Rojas on court six, 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore Jake Mayola (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) overwhelmed Bonczkowski in a pair of 6-1 sets on court five. The wins improved Lippman to 2-0 in singles play and Mayola to 2-1 in singles.

Cheung picked up his first collegiate singles win on court four against Andersen. The junior Red Dragon dominated the Bronco in the first set, 6-1, before he secured the match with a 6-3 second set.

Abidi dealt with a little adversity for his first singles match as a Red Dragon. He faced Guerrieri on court three and handled him in the first set, 6-3. Abidi trailed for a moment during the second set, then the two went into a set tiebreaker where Abidi came out on top for the match, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

Oneonta is on the road for their next match on Friday, April 17, against TCNJ in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) match at 4 pm.
