Oneonta Overcomes Cobleskill 5-1 in Five Inning Contest

Box Score

COBLESKILL, N.Y. - Despite thunder and a downpour ending the game in the bottom of the fifth, the Oneonta baseball team came out with a 5-1 victory over Cobleskill on Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 15-13 overall, while the Fighting Tigers fall to 11-13.

Oneonta got rolling in the first inning, with sophomore Joesph Monserrat reaching home on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) singled to put runners on first and third, and sophomore Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Freshman Alex Halwick (Selkirk, NY/Ravena Coeymans Selkirk) used a two-RBI single to push the Oneonta lead to 3-0. The Red Dragons shut down the Fighting Tigers 1-2-3 in the bottom of the frame.

Cobleskill tacked on a run in the third following a Ryan Lansing RBI single to cut the lead to 3-1. Sophomore Matt Neglia (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) controlled the pace, striking out a Cobleskill batter in the fourth to prevent any more Fighting Tiger runs.

In the fifth, junior Sean Clinton (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) led off with a double, and Monserrat walked. Duffy used a two-RBI single to push Oneonta ahead 5-1 before the game was called due to weather.

Duffy finished going 2-for-3 with one run and two RBI. Halwick added a hit and two RBI.

Neglia went 4.0 innings with four strikeouts, four hits, and one earned run.

Oneonta next plays Cobleskill on Wednesday, April 15, at 4 p.m.
