CANTON, N.Y.- The Oneonta baseball team defeated Canton 9-3 on Saturday afternoon to move to 15-13 overall and 5-5 in the SUNYAC. Canton falls to 8-15 and 0-8 in the conference. The second game was postponed due to rain to a date later to be confirmed.
The Roos used a single from Jared Paone in the bottom of the first to bring home a run from Sal Diaz to take a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, sophomore Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) doubled down the left field line to reach second and took third on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly from freshman Alex Halwick (Selkirk, NY/Ravena Coeymans Selkirk) gave Oneonta the tying run.
The Red Dragons built up to a 5-1 lead in the third, with senior Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) singling in a run from Zachary Rowe (Hudson, NY/Taconic Hills). Cronin followed with a two-RBI home run down the left-field line to make it 4-1. Senior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) scored on a wild pitch before the final out.
Canton tacked on runs in the fourth and sixth to cut the lead to 5-3, but Oneonta used a strong seventh inning to pull away for good. Senior Matt Sandoval (West Islip, NY/West Islip Senior) singled in a run from Cronin, and Jacoby stole home to make it 7-3. Sophomore Joseph Monserrat (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) capped off the inning with a two-RBI single to make it 9-3.
Junior Lukas Jachens (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central) pitched the final three innings, allowing just one hit with no runs and three strikeouts to grab the save.
Cronin finished the day batting 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBI. Jacoby went 3-for-5 with two runs.
Freshman Aiden Chartrand (Harrisville, NY/Harrisville) moves to 4-0 after pitching 6.0 innings with six hits, three runs, and two strikeouts.
Oneonta's next game is against Cobleskill on Tuesday, April 14 at 4 p.m.
