Softball Drops Two on the Road Against No. 6 Rowan

NEWARK, DE. -- The Oneonta softball team fell in both games of their doubleheader against No. 6 nationally ranked Rowan University, Monday afternoon at the University of Delaware's Delaware Softball Diamond. Rowan took game one, 8-0, in six innings, then they secured game two, 6-0. The results moved the Red Dragons to 1-3 this season and the Profs to 4-2 overall.

"We had two tough losses today versus Rowan," Head Coach Sara Curran-Headley commented. "They are a very solid team. I think we made some great plays and challenged them a bit more than the score would suggest."

Game One: Oneonta 0, Rowan 8 (6 Innings)
Freshman Ella Kean (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) was 2-for-2 and worked a walk in game one. Senior Jaime Cardello (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) and sophomore Riley McDonnell (Melville, N.Y./Walt Whitman) both went 1-for-2, and sophomore Tatum Passonno (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) was 1-for-3.

Sophomore Tanner Smith (White Plains, N.Y./Vahalla) (0-2) was tagged with the loss after pitching 2.0 innings for Oneonta, and allowing five runs on eight hits. Junior Emily Brown (Westbury, NY/Clarke) pitched 3.0 innings, struck out two, and allowed three unearned runs on two hits.

Rowan recorded three runs in the first inning with a two-run single from Abigail Pawlowski, then an RBI single from Maggie Funston. The Profs increased their lead to five in the bottom of the second when Emma Dobkin hit an RBI single and later scored on a triple.

The final three runs for Rowan were all unearned and scored in the fifth and sixth innings. The first was on a sacrifice fly, the second on an Oneonta misthrow, and the final run was scored on a fielder's choice where Jodi McGuigan beat out the throw at home.

Oneonta got a runner in scoring position a couple of times throughout the game but came up empty each time. Kean worked a one-out walk in the top of the first, then she advanced to second after Passonno hit a single to right field. Following Passonno's single, the Red Dragons lined into a double play to end the inning.

In the top of the third, McDonnell got the inning started with a single up the middle. Two outs later, Kean smacked a single to right field and allowed McDonnell to reach third and head for home, but she was tagged out at the plate. Cardello and Kean each hit a one-out single in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, however they could not advance any closer to home.

Rowan's BethAnne Doderer (2-0) pitched the complete game for Rowan, striking out three and allowing five hits and one walk. The Profs offensively were led by Dobkin, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Funston and Pawlowski both went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Game Two: Oneonta 0, Rowan 6
Rowan took a 1-0 lead after the first inning of game two off a single up the middle. The Profs extended their advantage to the 6-0 final in the bottom of the third inning with a pair of two-run singles and an RBI single.

The Red Dragons lone hit came from Brown with a single to left field on a 2-0 count in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman Eva Blaney (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) pinch ran for Brown but was called out on the next play on an interference call.

Brown finished game two 1-for-3. Freshman Caitlin McTiernan (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) (0-1) was tagged with the loss in her collegiate debut after pitching 3.0 innings, striking out four, and allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits. Sophomore Bridget Barry (East Patchogue, N.Y.) pitched the final 3.0 innings for the Red Dragons and struck out one while allowing two hits.

Rowan's Emily McCutcheon (2-2) picked up the win after pitching 6.0 innings, striking out five and allowing one hit. Pawlowski finished 2-for-3 with three RBI.

"We were better today than yesterday," Coach Curran-Headley concluded. "Hoping to keep on that trend."

The Red Dragons are back in action for the start of their spring break trip in California on March 14. Oneonta will travel to Whittier, California and face Whittier College that Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 3 pm eastern, 12 pm pacific.
