ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Oneonta baseball team took the field on Friday afternoon for a matchup against Brockport. Despite taking an early 2-1 lead, Brockport's pitching provided trouble for the Red Dragons as the Golden Eagles came ahead with a 9-4 win. Brockport moves to 7-13 overall, while Oneonta falls to 10-9.
Brockport got on the board early with a two-out RBI single to right-center field by Michael Norton to put them ahead 1-0. Oneonta quickly responded in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from senior Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) to tie the game 1-1. The Red Dragons went up ahead 2-1 later in the inning after an error at second base, allowing Duffy to score.
Jake Quigley (Harrison, NY/Harrison) had a 1-2-3 second inning for Oneonta, generating three straight flyouts while Camden Schaffer had a scoreless inning of his own.
Brockport loaded the bases at the top of the third inning after Oneonta reliever Brendan McGowan (Wappingers Falls, NY/Roy C. Ketcham Senior) entered the game and gave up two singles and one walk, leading to Quinn Mohoney tying the game for Brockport at 2-2. On the next pitch, McGowan allowed a two-RBI single to right field by Michael Norton to put the team ahead 4-2. The inning ended with Brockport ahead 5-2 after Blake Fortunato recorded an RBI.
The score remained the same until the top of the fifth inning when Brockport scored three more runs with a two RBI-double by Fortunato and an RBI-single up the middle from James Dixon.
Matthew Coon drove in Brockport's ninth run of the day with an RBI single to right field in the top of the seventh inning.
Oneonta showed some signs of life in the bottom of the seventh inning with an RBI single by Sean Clinton (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) to cut the lead to 9-3. Duffy hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the lead to 9-4, and that would end up being the final score of the game.
Camden Schaffer recorded the win for Brockport, going 7.0 innings with five hits, three runs, two earned runs, four walks, and seven strikeouts.
Clinton went 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Duffy went 2-for-4 with a single, a homerun, and two RBIs.
Kyle Blake went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Michael Norton went 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Fortunato drove in three RBIs.
Oneonta will next host Hamilton on Tuesday, March 31, at 4 p.m.
