ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team took the field on Tuesday afternoon to host Hamilton in a game where the rain took over, ultimately resulting in it being called after seven innings. It was not a sharp day for Hamilton pitching, and Oneonta took advantage to secure a 6-4 win. Oneonta improves to 11-9 overall, while Hamilton falls to 7-9.
Hamilton got off to a fast start, generating two walks and a stolen base before Lucas German grounded out to third base but recorded an RBI. On the next pitch, Anthony Palumbo drove in an RBI single to put Hamilton ahead 2-0 in the top of the first inning. Oneonta trailed 2-0 until the bottom of the first when senior Gavin Carlucci (Garrison, NY/Walter Panas) scored on a balk by Hamilton pitcher TJ Takis to cut the lead to 2-1.
Oneonta put together a five-run third inning, highlighted by a two-run double and a run scored by sophomore Zachary Rowe (Hudson, NY/Taconic Hills), a double by senior Anthony Loia (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) that scored two more runs for the Red Dragons, putting them ahead 6-2.
Caleb Nelson (Granville, NY/Granville Jr./Sr.) had a 1-2-3 fifth inning, generating a strikeout, flyout, and groundout. Mantas Kempinas also had a 1-2-3 fifth inning with a flyout, lineout, and groundout.
Hamilton responded with two runs in the top of the sixth inning from an RBI single by Edo Spadaccini. Spadaccini also scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 6-4.
Ryan Krzemienski (Commack, NY/Commack) entered the game to pitch for Oneonta in the seventh and put together a scoreless inning, which ended up being the final three outs of the game due to inclement weather.
Sophomore Nathan VanDeVoorde (Fairport, NY/Fairport) was the winning pitcher, going 1.0 innings, only allowing one hit, and recording a strikeout.
Rowe finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Carlucci also added two runs scored.
Herman and Palumbo both finished 1-for-3 with one RBI. Spadaccini also added an RBI and a run scored.
Oneonta will be back home to host RPI on Wednesday, April 1, at 4 p.m.
