ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta men's lacrosse team was defeated by Geneseo, 10-9, Wednesday afternoon at All College Field. Oneonta had a five-goal advantage by the end of the first quarter, then Geneseo climbed back and took the lead early in the fourth quarter for the game. The result moved the Red Dragons to 3-5 this season and the Knights to 5-3 overall.
Junior
Thomas Hnis (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park) co-led the team with three goals for three points, while senior
Aidan Boyle (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) finished with one goal and two assists for three points. Freshman
Ryan Babikian (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) recorded two goals for two points, and junior
Finn Morris (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) totaled two points off a goal and an assist.
"Really disappointed to lose today," said Head Coach
Pete Owens. "I thought we played hard, but not well enough to beat a very good Geneseo team. We're 0-0 in the league, and we're excited to get started."
Oneonta scored the first five goals of the game and took a 5-0 lead heading into the second quarter. Hnis got things started with an assist from senior
Jamie O'Neil (Bath, N.Y./Haverling), then Morris scored his seventh goal of the season at 10:01. After Hnis recorded his second goal of the game, Babikian fired in his first of the day at 5:09. Less than a minute after Babikian's goal, sophomore
Riley Royals (New Hyde Park, NY/Herricks) netted his eighth goal of the season to give the Red Dragons a five-goal lead.
The Knights brought themselves back into the contest with a 5-1 run in the second quarter and cut their deficit to 6-5 heading into halftime. Ryan and Ronnie Trebing led Geneseo in the quarter with a goal and an assist each. Boyle ripped in his 10th goal of the year off an assist from Morris to maintain the edge for Oneonta entering the break.
Ro. Trebing tied the game up with the first goal of the third quarter, however senior
Daniel Macchiarella (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) regained the lead for the Red Dragons with his fifth goal of the year off a pass from Boyle at 8:07. In the final minutes of the third, Geneseo had the extra-man advantage and scored with 1:20 to tie the game at seven going into the fourth quarter.
With 12:17 left in the game, the Knights took the lead for the first time in the game with a goal from Max Esposito. Geneseo extended their lead to 10-7 with 8:47 to play with scores from Jake Perinchief and Ry. Trebing.
The Red Dragons had one last stretch in the final moments of the game and pulled within a goal, 10-9, with 31 seconds left. After Babikian scored his ninth goal of the season at 2:07, Hnis fired in his 28th goal of the season for his hat trick with 31 seconds remaining. Geneseo won the ensuing faceoff and held Oneonta off from taking the game-tying shot.
Sophomore
Mark Restivo (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) finished the game with 20 saves for a .667 save percentage for Oneonta. Senior
Aidan Greene (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) and sophomore
Hunter Busch (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) both caused three turnovers. Greene also co-led the game with six ground balls.
Ben Bradshaw ended with 12 saves for a .571 save percentage for Geneseo. Ry. Trebing finished with two goals and two assists for the Knights, and Ro. Trebing recorded two goals and an assist.
Geneseo outshot Oneonta 43-33 in total shots, 30-21 on net, and finished with a 42-32 margin in ground balls. The Red Dragons were 23-for-29 on clear attempts and 0-for-5 in extra man opportunities. The Knights went 21-for-21 on clears and 1-for-3 on the man-up advantage.
The Red Dragons are back home for their next game on Saturday, March 28, when they kick off SUNYAC play against Potsdam at 1 pm on Red Dragon Field.
