ONEONTA, N.Y. - After the Oneonta baseball team opened the series against Oswego with a win, it could not pick up a win during Saturday's doubleheader. Oswego won the first game 2-1 and took the second 9-3. Oneonta falls to 8-8 overall and 1-2 in the SUNYAC, while Oswego improves to 6-9 overall and 2-1 in the SUNYAC.
The first game of the day was a pitching battle. Junior Jake Quigley (Harrison, NY/Harrison) opened with a 1-2-3 inning while striking out one Oswego batter. The Lakers scored in the top of the second inning with a two RBI double to right field by Benjamin Silverman.
Oneonta got on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning, after junior Sean Clinton (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) scored on a wild pitch to cut the Oswego lead to 2-1.
Matthew Drillings put Oneonta away with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the ninth to result in a 2-1 Oswego in game one of the doubleheader.
Clinton finished 1-for-3 with one run.
Silverman went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Mair went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Mason Sands (2-1) earned the win, going 7.1 innings, with five hits, one walk, one run, and four strikeouts. Matthew Drillings recorded the save for going the final 1.2 innings with two strikeouts.
Quigley went 9.0 innings, with seven hits, two runs, three walks, and nine strikeouts.
A walk, a wild pitch, and a bunt single led to Emil Sander driving in a sacrifice-fly RBI early in game two to put Oswego ahead 1-0. Oswego did not record another run until the top of the fifth inning, where they recorded four runs in the side led by an RBI-double to left field by Ryan Mayer, a sacrifice-fly RBI by Daniel Winchester, an RBI-single to right center field by Brendan Mair, and an RBI-single by Silverman to extend Oswego's lead to 5-0.
Oneonta got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning with three runs, led by an RBI-double by senior Anthony Loia (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington), a sacrifice-fly RBI by Clinton, and an RBI-single up the middle by sophomore Zachary Rowe (Hudson, NY/Taconic Hills) to cut Oswego's lead to 5-3.
Oswego responded with four runs in the top of the eighth inning. Thomas Harrington drove in a three RBI-double with the bases loaded after Silverman was called out at home plate. Winchester drove in his second RBI of the day with a single to center field to extend Oswego's lead to 9-3, which ultimately sealed the win and the doubleheader sweep.
Duffy finished with one run and one walk. Rowe went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Winchester went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Mayer finished with one RBI and two runs. Harrington finished with 3 RBIs.
Jonah Shearer (1-1) recorded the win, going 6.2 innings, with six hits, three runs, one walk, and six strikeouts. Owen Hoyt recorded the save.
Junior Caleb Nelson (Granville, NY/Granville Jr./Sr.) (1-2) went 5.0 innings, with seven hits, five runs, three walks, and two strikeouts.
Oneonta will next host Cobleskill on Wednesday, March 25, at 3.pm.
