ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team used a decisive middle-inning surge to power past SUNY Cobleskill, 11–7, on Wednesday afternoon at the Red Dragon Baseball Field. The Red Dragons move to 9-8 overall, while the Fighting Tigers fall to 2-7.
After trading early innings, Cobleskill jumped out to a 4–1 lead with a big second inning and added another run in the third to take a 5–1 advantage.
After sophomore pitcher Matt Callaghan (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) struck out a batter in the top of the fifth inning, Oneonta scored six runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead. Sophomore Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) singled in a run from senior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown), and senior Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) reached home on a wild pitch. Senior Anthony Loia (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) hit to center field to bring Cronin home to make it 5-4. Senior Edem Okpattah (Baltimore, MD/Georgia Premier Academy) tripled down the right field line to add two more runs, and a double by sophomore Joseph Monserrat (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) made it 7-5.
The Red Dragons added insurance with two runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth, building an 11–5 cushion following a two-RBI home run from Cronin. Cobleskill made one final push with a home run from Tony Woodie, but Oneonta closed the door to secure the win.
Cronin finished batting 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one home run. Duffy was 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Freshman Alex Halwick (Selkirk, NY/Ravena Coeymans Selkirk) added two hits, a run, and an RBI.
Woodie went 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBI, and a home run. Jake Brazzano batted 3-for-3.
Callaghan (1-0) went 3.0 innings with one hit and six strikeouts.
Oneonta plays Alfred State on Thursday, March 26 at 3 p.m.
