ONEONTA, N.Y. – It was all Red Dragons on Friday afternoon, as they recorded an 11-1, eight-inning win in the series opener against Oswego. Oneonta improves to 8-6 overall and 1-0 in the SUNYAC, while Oswego falls to 4-9 and 0-1 in the conference.
The first two innings were scoreless. The first run of the game came in the third inning, after Oswego pitcher Ryan Mayer gave up two walks and a double to load the bases for Oneonta. Freshman Alex Halwick (Selkirk, NY/Ravena Coeymans Selkirk) drove in a sacrifice-fly RBI to put Oneonta up 1-0.
Oneonta went on to score in the fourth inning after a throwing error by Mayer, which put runners on second and third. The error led to senior Anthony Loia (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) driving a single up the middle to extend the Oneonta lead to 2-0.
Oswego responded in the top of the fifth inning, as Harry Uvena grounded out to first base with runners on second and third to cut the Oneonta lead to 2-1, and that would be the only time Oswego scored during the game.
The Red Dragons tallied three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, with Halwick getting walked and sophomore Zachary Rowe (Hudson, NY/Taconic Hills) scoring on a wild pitch, and senior Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) drove a two-RBI double up the middle to put Oneonta up 5-1.
The sixth inning was scoreless before sophomore Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) drove in two more runs in the bottom of the seventh with a double to right field, extending the lead to 7-1.
Sophomore Joseph Monserrat (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) recorded a three-run inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Cronin drove in his third RBI of the day to put Oneonta up 11-1, resulting in the game being concluded in the eighth inning.
Freshman Aiden Chartrand (Harrisville, NY/Harrisville) pitched 8.0 innings, allowing just three hits to earn the win.
Monserrat had three RBIs and two runs. Cronin had three RBIs and one run. Duffy had two RBIs.
Uvena had one RBI, and Sander had one run.
