WOOSTER, OH - The Oneonta baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader at Wooster to open the three-game series against the Scots. The Red Dragons (2-2) took the first game 8-1 before falling 10-0 to the Scots (3-2) in the second contest.
Junior Jake Quigley (Harrison, NY/Harrison) struck out three batters in the bottom of the first inning to keep the game scoreless. Both teams went three up, three down from the second to the bottom of the fourth. Wooster was the first to score in the fifth when Noah Lindberg led off with a single to left field and stole second. Nathaniel Huxtable struck a double to bring Lindberg home to take a 1-0 lead.
Oneonta responded in the sixth when sophomore Joseph Monserrat (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) reached second on a throwing error. Senior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) singled, and sophomore Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) hit a double to bring Monserrat home. Senior Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) knocked a home run to right-center field to bring in three runs to take a 4-1 lead.
The Red Dragons added four runs in the ninth to secure the win. Monserrat doubled in a run from junior Joe LoMonaco (Shirley, NY/William Floyd). Alex Halwick (Selkirk, NY/Ravena Coeymans Selkirk) singled in a pair of runs before Jacoby struck a double to add a run from Halwick.
Jacoby went 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI. Duffy was 1-for-4 with three RBI and one run.
Quigley (1-0) went 5.0 innings with three hits, one run, and five strikeouts. Junior Lukas Jachens (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central) pitched 2.0 innings with three strikeouts.
Michael Scarpelli (0-1) went 5.1 innings for the Scots and had six hits, four runs, and five strikeouts.
Wooster shut out Oneonta in the second game, 10-0, as the Red Dragons were limited to four hits.
After leading 4-0 in the fourth, the Scots led off with a double from Lindberg in the fifth inning. Owen Sherrill doubled in a run, and a double from Maanav Bhatt made it 6-0. RBI singles from Aidan Krantz and Zack Barienbrock pushed Wooster ahead by eight. The Scots had two more runs in the seventh to end the game early.
Oneonta concludes the Ohio trip on Sunday, March 1, to face Wooster at 1 p.m.
