WOOSTER, OH - The Oneonta baseball team fell 9-7 to Wooster to conclude their Midwest trip on Sunday afternoon. The Red Dragons fall to 2-3 overall, while the Fighting Scots move to 4-2.
Wooster brought in five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Colin Leslie and Owen Sherill singled in runs to take a 2-0 lead. Andrew Kerr made it 5-0 with a two-RBI single up the middle before Aidan Krantz grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Oneonta responded in the top of the second with six runs on six hits. Senior Anthony Loia (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) singled to right field to load the bases. Sophomore Joseph Monserrat (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) singled in a run to cut the lead to 5-1. Senior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) hit a two-RBI single to center field, and senior Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) doubled to left field to add three runs to take a 6-5 lead.
Wooster retook the lead in the third with Luke Rizzo making it 7-6 following a two-RBI single up the middle. The Fighting Scots added two more runs to lead 9-6.
Duffy hit his second home run of the weekend to cut the lead to two runs in the top of the fourth.
Neither side scored again, but Oneonta loaded the bases in the eighth before a final groundout to third base.
Duffy finished the day going 2-for-4 with one run and four RBI. Freshman Alex Halwick (Selkirk, NY/Ravena Coeymans Selkirk) was 3-for-5 with one run. Jacoby went 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run.
Rizzo had three RBI and a run for Wooster. Leslie batted 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Senior Martin Thorsland (Maryland, NY/Milford Central) (0-1) pitched 2.2 innings with eight hits, nine runs, and one strikeout. Junior Caleb Nelson (Granville, NY/Granville Jr./Sr.) went 4.1 innings with six strikeouts.
James MacMillan (1-0) went 3.2 innings with three hits, one run, and four strikeouts. Carter O'Neill earned the save.
Oneont has its home opener next weekend with a three-game series against Plymouth State starting on Friday, March 6, at 3 p.m.
