POTSDAM, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's basketball team upended Potsdam on the road for a 62-26 SUNYAC win, Friday evening. The Red Dragons had 10 different players score as senior
Lidia Boucher (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) led the game with 14 points, seven rebounds, and three steals, while sophomore
Leela Guobadia (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) came off the bench and went 5-for-8 from the floor for 11 points and eight rebounds. The win improved the Red Dragons to 14-10 this season, 9-8 in SUNYAC play, and the Bears dropped to 5-19 overall and 4-13 against conference opponents.
"It was a great team win!" exclaimed Head Coach
Daphne Thompson. "The team defense was stifling."
Oneonta got on the board with back-to-back triples from junior
Carlie Young (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville Central) and Boucher. Potsdam gained the edge with a layup at 5:26, but Oneonta regained the lead and kept it for the rest of the game after Young drained a deep two from the top of the arc at 4:44.
Following a layup from the Bears' Olivia Cook to make it a 15-9 deficit with 28 seconds left in the first, the Red Dragons defense went on lock down and kept Potsdam scoreless for eight minutes to go on a 15-0 run for a 30-9 lead with 1:50 to go in the first half. Freshman
Kayla Beaudoin (Brunswick, NY/Tamarac) began the stretch with a split trip off technical free throws, before Guobadia scored over her defender to end the first quarter. Freshman
Addy Eckert (Bloomville, NY/South Kortright) recorded a bucket on the first two possessions for Oneonta to start the second quarter, then Boucher received two inbound passes for a pair of midrange jumpers, while Guobadia and sophomore
Kendall Mack (Cortland, NY/Cortland) each split a pair at the line to give the team a commanding 21-point lead. Potsdam used the free throw line to get on the board in the second quarter, but a basket from both Guobadia and Mack kept the Red Dragons ahead 34-14 at the break.
After multiple offensive rebounds, Fret-Thom got the ball at the top of the key for a two-pointer to start the scoring in the third quarter, then Boucher created space for a stepback three-pointer to put Oneonta ahead 39-14 at 8:40. The Bears attempted to trim the lead, however Guobadia and Desrats powered a 10-0 Red Dragon run to close out the third quarter up 49-18.
Junior
Maddie Hoy (Canton, NY/Canton Central) knocked down a couple of three-pointers from each corner while Eckert scored on a second chance effort to give Oneonta a 57-21 lead with 5:09 to play. Junior
Angelena Giuliano (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) drained a trey from the wing off an assist from Guobadia, and Mack capped off the game with an underhand layup on a second chance attempt for the 62-26 final.
Young finished with eight points, four boards, and three steals. Eckert and Hoy both totaled six points, while Eckert had nine rebounds, including eight on the offensive side, and Desrats had the game-high five assists with four points and seven rebounds. Mack had five points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Oneonta shot 31.6 percent from the floor, 24.1 percent from deep (7-for-29), and they finished with 54-35 difference in rebounds, a 27-5 margin in second chance points, and 20-7 advantage in points off turnovers. Potsdam finished 17.8 percent from the field, and 0.0 percent (0-for-17) from three-point range. The Bears were led by DaeLynn Alcock with 12 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double.
