PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The No. 23 nationally ranked Oneonta men's soccer team wrapped up their road trip with a 2-2 draw at Plattsburgh in SUNYAC play, Saturday afternoon. Graduate student
Milton Mancias Magana (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) netted his first of the season before freshman
Drew Lennon (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) scored his first collegiate goal for a 2-1 lead in the 59th minute, however Plattsburgh tied the match a few minutes later for the end result. The tie improved the Red Dragons record to 7-0-2 this season, 1-0-1 in the SUNYAC, and the Cardinals to 4-3-3 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play.
"There's just no way to camouflage it, those are two absolutely tough goals to concede," Head Coach
Iain Byrne commented. "We played well, controlled most of the match and were a constant threat to score. I think we hit the post three times, but at this level, you cannot gift a team two goals and expect to win."
Plattsburgh took the lead in the 17th minute with a goal from Michael Rodriguez.
Oneonta only trailed for a moment until the 37th minute when Mancias Magana tied the game. The Red Dragons were working the ball down the field and got it to senior
Imari Harris (Kingston, NY/Kingston). Harris passed the ball to Mancias Magana, who was at the corner of the penalty area, moved past one defender and fired off a shot that went into the far side of the net for his first goal of the season.
The Red Dragons took a 2-1 lead in the 59th minute with Lennon's first career goal. Junior
Nico Loaiza (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood) gained possession of the ball and passed it to Lennon. From 25 yards out, the Red Dragon freshman brought the ball up to the D and ripped a shot into the left side of the net for the goal.
In the 62nd minute, Plattsburgh tied the game when Esteban Loaiza scored off a Cardinal corner kick.
Oneonta's Loaiza recorded the final shot on target in the 72nd, but he was stopped and the game ended in a draw.
Senior
James Cintron (Poughkeepsie, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) finished the game with a save for the Red Dragons. Matthew D'Ippolito collected seven saves for the Cardinals.
Oneonta outshot Plattsburgh 23-9 in total shots, 9-3 in shots on target, while the Cardinals had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Red Dragons are back home for the first time in over a month as they host Potsdam on Wednesday, October 7, for SUNYAC play at 4 pm at Red Dragon Field.
