OSWEGO, N.Y. - The SUNY Oneonta women's swimming & diving team competed against SUNY Oswego on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons posted several strong individual and relay performances, highlighted by junior Alexis Gibson's (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) second-place finishes in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle, as Oneonta finished with 78 points against Oswego's 135.
Gibson led Oneonta in the sprint freestyle events. She placed second in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.24 seconds before finishing second in the 100-yard freestyle in 57.25 seconds. Freshman Kaylee Sliper (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) added a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 1:01.34, while senior Ashley Brousseau (Peru, NY/Peru Central) placed fourth in 1:07.49.
In the distance events, freshman Arianna Petkovits (Huntington, NY) paced the Red Dragons in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing second in 5:55.05. Sophomore Mary Bush (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) followed in third place in 6:05.58, while freshman Olivia Lutz (Albany, NY) finished fourth in 6:13.19. Petkovits also competed in the 200-yard freestyle, placing fourth in 2:10.53.
Oneonta also saw strong performances in the backstroke events. Petkovits finished second in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:07.28, while Sophomore Madeleine Cantwell (Buffalo, NY/Amherst Central) placed third in 1:17.09. Freshman Catie Badu followed closely in fourth place, finishing in 1:17.50.
In the butterfly, freshman Alexis Knill (Queensbury, NY) led the Red Dragons with a second-place finish in the 100-yard event, touching the wall in 1:09.69. Lutz finished third in 1:14.59, while freshman Ailish O'Hara (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) placed fourth in 1:18.04.
Sophomore Sydney Richards (Rochester, NY/Ruben A. Cirillo) paced Oneonta in the 100-yard breaststroke, placing second in 1:16.34. Senior Raina Willie (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville Senior) followed in third place in 1:29.73, while sophomore Hayes Dorgan (/) finished fourth in 1:35.93.
The Red Dragons also competed in the relay events. Oneonta's A team of Bush, Petkovits, Sliper, and Brousseau placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:54.99. The B team of sophomore Krista Broussard (Chesterfield, VA/Thomas Dale), freshman Aisling Reed (Long Island, NY), Badu, and O'Hara finished third in 2:05.89.
In the 200-yard medley relay, Oneonta's A team of freshman Maria Petkovits (Huntington, NY), Richards, Gibson, and Knill finished second in 2:00.24.
The Red Dragons next compete at RPI on Saturday, October 24, at 1 p.m.
