Red Dragons Split on Final Day of Skidmore Classic

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team split on the final day of the Skidmore Classic on Saturday morning. The Red Dragons (7-1) opened with a 3-0 sweep over Nichols (2-3) and then lost 3-0 to Williams (3-0).

The Red Dragons downed the Bison 25-14, 25-22, and 25-18. Oneonta opened the first set 4-0 with freshman Layla Pertchik (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) knocking in two aces. The Red Dragons rattled off a 5-0 run with a pair of aces from sophomore Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville) and a kill by Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) to lead 9-2.

Nichols cut the lead to four before McCabe hit a kill to make it 10-5. Junior Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) tacked on a pair of kills to extend the lead to 13-7. The Bisons pulled within five after Melina Bezati sent in a kill. Oneonta went on a 5-0 run, and a Bisons' service error sealed the set win.

Nichols took a 7-4 lead in the second after Maille Ianniruberto tallied two aces. Oneonta responded with a 4-0 span with two kills from senior Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia) and a McCabe ace to take an 8-7 lead.

The teams traded points until a 3-0 Oneonta run made it 13-10. A Cadence Meltz (Highland, NY/Highland) ace made it 22-20, and kills from Landversicht and McCabe made it 2-0.

Oneonta went ahead 19-11 after two aces from Landversicht. Freshman Corynna Manjos (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) and Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) tacked on kills to take a 21-13 lead. Landversicht sent in the match-winning kill to complete the sweep.

Welsh led the team with seven kills, while Kendrick had six. Meltz knocked, and Landversicht had four aces. Pertchik finished with 21 assists, and senior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior) grabbed 11 digs.

Alyssa Morse and Kya Burdier led Nichols with seven kills each. Ruby St. Onge had 14 assists, and Elizabeth Mullen grabbed ten digs.

Oneonta suffered its first loss of the season to Williams. The Ephs won 25-18, 25-22, and 25-15.

Kendrick, Welsh, and Landversicht each had five kills. Moller and Meltz recorded two aces, while Morretta had seven blocks. Pertchik made 17 assists.

Tatum Baker led the Ephs with 11 kills, and Keely Campuzano had nine. Morgan Daetz had 17 assists, while Eve Kaplan tallied 14 digs.

Oneonta next heads to the Sage Tournament on Sept. 12.
