HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Oneonta men's tennis team started the 2025-26 season strong and swept Houghton on each court for a 7-0 shutout road win over Houghton, Tuesday evening. Five Red Dragons won in doubles and singles play, and sophomore Aiden Wavra (Katy, TX/Katy) recorded his first singles victory as a Red Dragon. Eight of the nine courts were won in straight sets for Oneonta as they start the season 1-0 and Houghton dropped to 0-1.

In doubles play, senior William Schmid (Yonkers/Salesian HS) and junior Chris Chippari (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) bageled Preston Tobokski and Rune Camps on the No. 1 doubles court, 6-0, while junior Seth Cheung (Somers, N.Y./Somers) and sophomore Ryan Geller (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y./Cornwall) overpowered Ben Unger and Isaac Anderson on the No. 3 court, 6-4. The sophomore tandem of Peter Pitaleff (Garrison, N.Y./Highland Falls Fort Montgomery) and Jaden Ritterman (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) had a close contest on the No. 2 court against Jonas Likens and Jason Murphy, but Pitaleff and Ritterman defeated their Highlander opponents, 7-5, before a set tiebreak was needed.

The Red Dragons' dominance continued in singles play for the season-opening shutout. Chippari bested Tobokski on the No. 1 court in straight 6-3 sets, while Ritterman upended Murphy with a pair of 6-2 sets on the No. 4 court, and Pitaleff beat Unger on the No. 5 court in a couple of, 6-4, 6-4 sets.

Wavra won his first match with the team on the No. 6 singles court over Luke Maliszewski, 6-3, 6-2. Similar to Wavra, Geller defeated Likens in straight sets on the No. 3 court 6-3, 6-2. Schmid faced Camps on the No. 2 singles court where he had to battle into a third set. Schmid won the first set, 6-1, before Camps forced a third set. In the final set, Schmid overwhelmed Camps for a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory.

Oneonta is back in action on Saturday, September 27, for a four-team tournament at Union College. The Red Dragons will face the University of Hartford at 9 am, then they will play Union or Maattanville, pending the results of the first match.
