NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team wrapped the regular season with an 11-4 loss at New Paltz on Saturday morning. The Red Dragons fall to 23-15-1 overall and 9-9 in the conference to secure the fourth seed in the SUNYAC Tournament. The Hawks finish at 27-13 and 14-4 in the SUNYAC.
Oneonta started the first inning with a two-run home run from senior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. After two groundouts, New Paltz loaded the bases in the bottom of the first. The Hawks walked in four runs to take a 4-2 lead. Michael Ascanio doubled home a run from Tommy Kreider in the second to push the lead to 5-2.
New Paltz extended its lead by six runs in the fourth when Matt Sarni hit a two-RBI single. Freshman Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) followed with a home run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 8-3, but New Paltz rattled off three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Alex Ouellette doubled in a run, and a Kreider single made it 11-3. Oneonta brought one more run in the ninth from a sacrifice fly from senior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem).
Oneonta next plays in the SUNYAC Tournament from May 8-10. The location and opponent will be determined.
