CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team fell 6-3 in the first game of the SUNYAC Tournament on Thursday afternoon. Oneonta now plays New Paltz on Saturday, May 10, at 1 p.m. at Cortland's Robert H. Wallace '53 Field.
Cortland (27-11) scored first in the bottom of the second inning. After two outs, Mitchell Kelly doubled to right field. Nick Marola followed with a double to left center to bring the run home and take a 1-0 lead. Oneonta (23-16-1) could not respond in the third, but senior James Torres (North Salem, NY/North Salem) struck out one batter in the bottom of the frame to start a 1-2-3 inning.
Oneonta loaded the bases in the fourth, but Cortland's Luis Misla struck out three batters to prevent a run.
In the top of the fifth, senior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) singled to right field. Senior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) batted after and knocked a home run to right field to give Oneonta a 2-1 lead.
The advantage was short-lived as Cortland hit a grand slam from Marc Stockhausen to go ahead 5-2 in the bottom of the frame.
Cortland's Nick Hanson struck out all three Oneonta batters in the sixth, but Foglia hit another home run in the top of the eighth to cut the lead to 5-3. Cortland added another run in the ninth to take a three-run lead.
Oneonta loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but a final strikeout ended any late comebacks.
Foglia went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Gilkey added a hit and a run.
Marola batted 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Torres pitched 5.0 innings with seven hits, five runs, and three strikeouts. Junior Martin Thorsland (Maryland, NY/Milford Central) went 2.0 innings with three hits and no runs with one strikeout.
The Cortland pitchers totaled 17 strikeouts, with Misla having nine over 5.0 innings. Hanson struck out four.
