NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team fell in two games in Friday's doubleheader to New Paltz. The Red Dragons dropped the first game 9-4 before losing 5-4 in the second. Oneonta falls to 23-14-1 overall and 9-8 in the SUNYAC, while the Hawks move to 26-13 and 13-4 in the conference.
Oneonta took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first of game one. Freshman Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) singled home a run from junior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown). The Hawks responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Wallace Kirkpatrick hit a two-RBI single to right field, making it 2-1.
The Red Dragons went 1-2-3 in the second, while the Hawks scored four runs on four hits. Anthony Pericolosi singled in a run, and Michael Ascanio brought in two. Kirkpatrick hit a sacrifice fly to push the Hawks' lead to 6-1.
Senior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) doubled in a run from senior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) in the third to cut the lead to four, but New Paltz pushed ahead 8-2 soon after.
Oneonta kept New Paltz off the board from the fourth to seventh inning, with senior Logan Kaufman (Hobart, NY/South Kortright) striking out two batters in the fifth. Cronin hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to cut the lead to 8-4, but New Paltz scored again in the eighth.
Oneonta took an early lead in the second game, with Foglia hitting a sacrifice fly in the first to make it 1-0. The Red Dragons brought in two runs in the second. Freshman Joseph Monserrat (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) singled home junior Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.), and Jacoby followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0. Senior Jake Torres struck out two batters in the third to keep the Hawks off the board.
The Red Dragons added a run from a Jacoby sacrifice fly in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. The Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on a bases-loaded walk.
After a scoreless fifth inning, New Paltz tied in the sixth with Pericolos hitting a two-RBI single. Tommy Kreider hit a two-run home run to make it 4-4. Neither side scored after the ninth inning, and extras were needed. Kreider hit the walk-off double in the 10th to grab the Hawks' victory.
Oneonta concludes the regular season on Sat. May 3 at 10 a.m. at New Paltz.
