ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta men's lacrosse team came up short in their SUNYAC contest on the road at Oswego, 11-10, Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons were ahead 8-5 entering the fourth quarter then the Lakers scored five unanswered to take the game. Sophomore
Thomas Hnis (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park) led the team with three goals and two assists, and senior
Matthew Krieg (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) recorded one goal and three assists. The result moved Oneonta to 5-7 overall, 2-1 in the SUNYAC, while the Lakers improved to 7-3 this season and 3-0 in conference play.
Krieg helped the Red Dragons jump out to an early 3-0 lead at 11:58 with the opening goal then a pair of assists to Hnis and junior Jaime O'Neil. Following a couple Laker goals, senior
Vincent Herbstman (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) netted his 12th goal of the season off a pass from Hnis, then senior
Gavin Teiner (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) received a pass from senior
Vincent Tirino (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) and netted his fifth of the year to give Oneonta a 5-3 lead after the first.
Junior
Anthony Munro (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) got the ball from Hnis and put the Red Dragons up three until the Lakers scored a pair to make it a 6-5 deficit at 5:41. In the final two minutes of the period, Munro went top shelf for his 19th goal of the season and Hnis fired a shot low for his second of the day and gave Oneonta an 8-5 advantage with 59 seconds in the first half. Oswego won the ensuing faceoff after Hnis' goal and scored to go into the break trailing 8-6.
Oneonta built a 10-6 lead after Hnis and O'Neil recorded their 36th and 34th goals of the season, respectively, with 6:12 left in the third. Both teams remained scoreless in the third period, then Oswego recorded five goals in the final quarter. The Lakers tied the game with 2:14 remaining before they took the lead with 39 seconds left. The Red Dragons had a couple opportunities in the closing seconds to tie the game, however they had each shot go wide of the net.
O'Neil and Munro each finished with two goals on the day, Munro also picked up four ground balls. Senior
Stephen Barikyan (Tappan/Tappan Zee) finished 14-for-24 on faceoffs and collected the game-high seven ground balls.
Freshman
Mark Restivo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) finished the game with 12 saves for a .522 save percentage for the Red Dragons. Seamus Hand had 12 saves for the Lakers.
Oneonta outshot 39-36, while Oswego had a 23-22 edge on shots on target and a 28-25 advantage on ground balls. The Red Dragons were 16-for-19 on clear attempts and 0-for-1 on extra man opportunities, while the Lakers were 19-for-19 on clears and 1-for-1 on the man-up.
Oneonta is back on the road on Saturday, April 12, for a SUNYAC game against Potsdam at 1 pm.
