CANTON, N.Y. -- The Oneonta softball team upended Canton on the road in a pair of mercy ruled games and scored a program record 34 runs in a 34-0 game one win then continued the masterful performance in game two for a 13-0 victory in their SUNYAC opening doubleheader, Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons tossed a no-hitter in game one, allowed only one hit in game two, and broke or tied multiple team records in the twin bill sweep as they improved to 8-10 overall, 2-0 in the SUNYAC, and the Roos dropped to 0-13 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
Sophomore
Emily Brown (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) became the seventh Red Dragon in program history to throw a no-hitter in game one. Brown threw 5.0 hitless innings with only three walks and struck out a program record 14 batters. The previous record was 13 set by Jessica Bartalsky against Oswego on April 4, 2011, and it was the team's first no-hitter since Alyssa Bluethgen threw one against Potsdam on April 18, 2019.
Senior
Julia Serena (White Plains, N.Y./Valhalla) ended the day 8-for-9 and hit four home runs, one double, worked three walks and recorded 12 RBI. She was 5-for-5 with a pair of home runs and seven RBI in game one which tied the program's records for most hits and RBI in a single game. The senior joined Sarah Johnson, Traci Lichtenstein, and Caroline Koch as the only Red Dragons with seven RBI in a game, and she tied Samantha Fancher and Selena Ruiz with five hits. Serena also joined Megan Palmatier as the only two to hit multiple home runs in a game, and she did so in both games of the doubleheader against Canton this weekend.
Junior
Jaime Cardello (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) had a phenomenal game one and joined Serena, Fancher, and Ruiz in the program's record five-hit club by going 5-for-7 with a double and three RBI in the win.
Game One: Oneonta 34, Canton 0 (5 Innings)
Oneonta ran away in game one with 13 runs in the first inning then they added another 11 in the second to go up 24-0. The team continued to shutout the Roos while they scored one in the third, three in the fourth, and capped off their offensive showcase with six runs in the fifth.
The Red Dragons had 10 batters finish with multiple hits in the victory. Serena's two home runs both happened in the top of the first inning of her 5-for-5, seven RBI performance, and Cardello finished 5-for-7 with three RBI. Freshman
Tatum Passonno (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) and Brown each recorded four hits and five RBI.

Abigail Silliman (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia) finished game one 3-for-4 with four RBI and two doubles, while senior
Sophia Mangone (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) and freshman
Riley McDonnell (Melville, N.Y./Walt Whitman) both had three hits and two RBI. Freshman
Anna Spicciatie (Oakdale, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 and scored two runners, freshman
Tanner Smith (White Plains, N.Y./Vahalla) was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and sophomore
Ava Thys (Fairfax, Va./James W. Robinson Secondary (Va.)) finished 2-for-2 with a double and scored twice.
Freshman
Bridget Barry (East Patchogue, N.Y.) and senior
Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) each recorded a hit and an RBI. Barry roped a triple into right field that scored Smith in the top of the fifth, then Brennan scored Barry with a single up the middle.
In her no-hitter performance, Brown (5-4) threw 76 pitches, struck out 14 of the 15 outs and only walked the opening batter in the first then two more in the fifth inning.
Game Two: Oneonta 13, Canton 0 (5 Innings)
Oneonta's hot bats continued in game two for a 13-0 mercy-rule win. Thys and Cardello each hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning for a 2-0 lead. Serena blasted a three-run shot in the second inning then freshman
Sophia Camacho (Newburgh, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) scored on a fielding error and Mangone recorded an RBI double to go up 7-0 after two innings of play.
In the top of the third inning, Serena connected on her fourth home run of the day to score Spicciatie and Mangone later brought Thys home with a single to center field. Thys hit another sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, then Brown brought Serena home later in the inning with a single up the middle. Sophomore
Maya Nelsen (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay Cross River) hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning for the Red Dragons final run.
Serena finished game two 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI, while Mangone went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Mangone finished the day 7-for-8 with two doubles and four RBI. Brown and Nelsen both went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Thys was 1-for-1 with two RBI and two stolen bases. Camacho ended game two 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base, and Spittciatie finished 2-for-3 with two stolen bases.
Smith (2-2) earned the win after she pitched 4.0 innings, struck out a career-high nine, and allowed only one hit in the fourth inning. Junior
Anna Torgersen (Chester, NJ/Mendham) pitched the last inning and struck out one.
The Red Dragons are back in action on Wednesday, April 9, for a non-conference doubleheader on the road against Hamilton starting at 3:30 pm.
