ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta softball team dropped both games of their SUNYAC doubleheader against New Paltz Monday afternoon at Red Dragon Softball Stadium. New Paltz took game one in five innings, 12-3, then game two, 3-0. Sophomore
Ava Thys (Fairfax, Va./James W. Robinson Secondary (Va.)) finished the day 4-for-5 with an RBI triple and a stolen base as the Red Dragons moved to 8-12 this season, 2-2 in the SUNYAC, and the Hawks improved to 9-13 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Game One: Oneonta 3, New Paltz 12 (5 Innings)
New Paltz went up two in the top of the first with a RBI single followed by an RBI double. Oneonta got one run back in the bottom half of the inning to make it 2-1. Following a pair of walks from freshman
Sophia Camacho (Newburgh, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and senior
Sophia Mangone (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley), sophomore
Emily Brown (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) hit into a fielder's choice where the Hawks second baseman got Mangone out at second, however the shortstop overthrew the first baseman and allowed Camacho to cross home plate.
The Hawks hit a two-run home run in the top of the second then extended their lead to 7-1 in the third with another home run and a two-run double.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Red Dragons scored two runs to cut the deficit to 7-3. Brown led off the inning with a single to right field then freshman
Riley McDonnell (Melville, N.Y./Walt Whitman) came in to pinch run. Thys brought McDonnell home for her eighth RBI of the season with a triple to right center that bounced over the right fielder's glove. Junior
Jaime Cardello (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) then scored Thys with a single to center field for her 10th RBI of the year.
New Paltz put the game out of reach with five runs in the top of the fifth off three singles and a sacrifice fly.
Thys finished 2-for-2 with an RBI triple and Cardello ended 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Brown (5-5) was tagged with the loss after pitching 2.0 innings, striking out two, and allowing five runs on six hits. Senior
Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) pitched 2.0 innings, struck out two, and allowed five earned runs on five hits, and senior
Angelina Scalere (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) pitched 1.0 inning and struck out one.
Sydney Waldon (4-7) pitched the complete game for New Paltz, struck out four and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits.
Game Two: Oneonta 0, New Paltz 3
New Paltz scored all three of their runs off two hits from Kelsey O'Brien. O'Brien hit an RBI single in the third inning then a two-run home run in the fifth for the 3-0 final.
Oneonta got a runner in scoring position in five of the seven innings and unfortunately came up empty each time. In the bottom of the first, senior
Julia Serena (White Plains, N.Y./Valhalla) was on second when Brown hit a two-out single to center, however Serena was tagged out at home. Thys singled to right center in the second inning and later stole third, but she could not advance home.Serena made it to second base in the third inning, off a walk then a single from Mangone, and again in the fifth with a double to left center, yet she was left stranded both times.
Serena and Thys each finished 2-for-3, while Brown and Mangone were 1-for-3.
Freshman
Tanner Smith (White Plains, N.Y./Vahalla) (2-3) received the loss after pitching 6.1 innings, striking out four and allowing three runs on six hits. Junior
Anna Torgersen (Chester, NJ/Mendham) pitched the final 0.2 innings.
Leah Gunsett (4-5) pitched the complete game for New Paltz and struck out three while allowing six hits.
The Red Dragons are back in action on Tuesday, April 15, for a SUNYAC doubleheader at Oswego starting at 3 pm.
