ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball overcame the weather and Canton Saturday afternoon, earning a 13-2 win over the Roos in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons move to 15-6-1 overall and 6-0 in the SUNYAC, while Canton falls to 3-14 and 0-6 in the conference.
Canton got on the board in the top of the first, with Eliezer Vazquez singling in an RBI from Chris McLean.
Oneonta evened the score in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) hit a sacrifice fly to bring home senior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown).
Canton went 1-2-3 in the second, and the Red Dragons scored six runs. Senior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) walked with the bases loaded, and Jacoby scored on a wild pitch. Senior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) capped the inning off with a three-RBI home run to right field to push the Red Dragons ahead 7-1.
Senior pitcher James Torres (North Salem, NY/North Salem) struck out three batters in the third, and Oneonta continued to build its lead in the fourth. Junior Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) hit a home run to right field, and a triple from senior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) brought in two more runs to make it 11-1.
The Red Dragons added another run in the fifth and their 13th run in the sixth when senior Andrew Bonilla (Walden, NY/Valley Central) tripled home freshman Travis Gfrerer (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa). The Roos scored again, but the game ended following the seventh inning.
Torres went 5.0 innings with one hit, one run, and five strikeouts to grab the win.
Canton's A.J. Campi (0-4) went 1.2 innings with two hits and seven runs.
Oneonta next plays at Cobleskill on Wed. Apr. 9 at 4 p.m.
