ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team went unbeaten at home with a doubleheader sweep over visiting John Jay on Tuesday afternoon. Oneonta took the first game 7-0 and then won 4-2 in the second. The Red Dragons move to 23-12-1 and are 15-0-1 at Red Dragon Field. The Bloodhounds fall to 14-16 overall with the loss.
The Bloodhounds went down 1-2-3 in the top of the first, with fifth-year pitcher Tom Roefaro (Utica, NY/Notre Dame) striking out one batter. Junior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) led off with a triple to right center and reached home from a Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) sacrifice fly. The Red Dragons loaded the bases down two outs, and a double by junior Matt Sandoval (West Islip, NY/West Islip Senior) brought in three runs. A final hit from sophomore Lukas Jachens (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central) pushed the Red Dragons' lead to 5-0.
Roefaro struck out two Bloodhounds in the top of the second to keep John Jay off the board. Oneonta added another run at the bottom of the frame when senior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) singled Gilkey home.
Oneonta limited the John Jay offense, and senior James Torres (North Salem, NY/North Salem) came in to pitch the fifth inning. He struck out two batters to complete a 1-2-3 inning.
The Red Dragons scored once more in the sixth, with senior Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) reaching home on an error.
Roefaro (2-1) went 4.0 innings with two hits and five strikeouts. John Jay's Sebastian Sanchez pitched 6.0 innings with eight hits, seven runs, and one strikeout.
The Bloodhounds took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Ryan Cherichel doubled and reached home from a Santos Anzalone single. Ethan Simaan singled in another run to take a 2-0 lead.
John Jay kept Oneonta off the board until the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Roscoe Carrol reached home on an error, and a Gilkey sacrifice fly brought Jacoby home to tie 2-2. Senior Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) walked and stole a pair of bases to reach third. Freshman Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) hit a triple, and senior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) followed with an RBI single to take a 4-2 lead.
Junior Wyatt Braun (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) struck out two batters, and senior Josh Martin picked up the save in the seventh with one strikeout.
Junior Dominic Colarusso (Stony Point, NY/Albertus Magnus) picked up the win, going 3.0 innings with four hits, two runs, and three strikeouts.
Oneonta wraps up the regular season with a three-game SUNYAC series at New Paltz starting on Fri. May 2 at 3 p.m.
