OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team dropped close two games to Oswego in Friday afternoon's SUNYAC doubleheader. The Red Dragons fell 7-4 in the opener and then lost 10-7 in the second game.
Oneonta (21-9-1, 9-5 SUNYAC) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first of game one. Freshman Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) doubled in a run from senior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) before senior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) reached home. Oswego (20-11, 10-4 SUNYAC) went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the frame, with freshman Zachary Rowe (Hudson, NY/Taconic Hills) striking out one batter.
The Lakers scored in the second when Daniel Winchester reached home on a Joe McLaughlin sacrifice fly. Oswego added two more runs in the fifth. Thomas Harrington singled home Patrick May, and Trey McGowan scored on an error to take a 3-2 lead.
The Red Dragon responded in the top of the sixth when junior Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) hit a home run to right-center field to retake the lead at 4-3. The teams traded leads until Oswego took a 7-4 lead in the eighth following a two-RBI single from McGowan.
In the second game, Oneonta took a 5-0 lead in the second inning. Junior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) doubled in runs from seniors Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) and Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown). A double from senior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) added a run from Jacoby.
Oneonta kept Oswego off the board until the third. A Dylan Rosenberg double brought in runs from Harrington and McGowan to cut the lead to 5-2. The Lakers scored again in the fifth and took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Tishawn Featherstone hit a three-RBI home run to make it 6-5, and a home run from Rosenberg pushed the lead to two runs.
Oneonta tied in the seventh following a two-RBI single by senior Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) to make it 7-7.
The Lakers capitalized on three bases-loaded walks in the bottom of the eighth to pull ahead.
Oneonta plays Oswego on Sat. Apr. 26 at noon.
