ONEONTA, N.Y. - There were 35 hits in Wednesday afternoon's game between the Oneonta baseball team and Castleton. The Red Dragons came out on top with an 18-9 win and move to 21-9-1 overall. The Spartans fall to 11-19 with the loss.
In the bottom of the first, senior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) doubled in a run from junior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) and reached home following a sacrifice fly from freshman Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa). Castleton brought in a run in the second, but Jacoby hit a two-RBI double in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-1 lead.
Jack Boyle led off the third with a home run to center field in the third to cut the lead to 4-2. Jackson Cardoza then reached home to cut the lead to one. Castleton tied in the fourth with Cardoza singling in a run.
Oneonta erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Red Dragons loaded the bases with one out, and a three-RBI triple from senior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) pushed the Red Dragons ahead 7-4. A Cronin triple brought in two more runs, and a sacrifice fly from senior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) made it 10-4.
Castleton fought back to make it 12-8 in the seventh, with Brendan Shader hitting a home run to left field.
Oneonta added six more runs in the eighth. Gilkey hit a grand slam to left field to push Oneonta ahead 16-8, and fifth-year Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) doubled in a run from senior Andrew Bonilla (Walden, NY/Valley Central) to go up by ten runs. The Spartans closed the ninth with one more run before the end.
Gilkey finished with two hits, one home run, one triple, two runs, and seven RBI. Jacoby batted 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI. Cronin was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Foglia added two hits and three runs.
Oneonta next travels to face Oswego in SUNYAC play on Fri. Apr. 25 at 3 p.m.
