ONEONTA, N.Y. - With the Oneonta baseball team down 4-3 in the ninth, senior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) hit a two-run single to give the Red Dragons a walk-off win over the Blue Devils on Saturday afternoon. Oneonta sweeps the season series and moves to 20-9-1 and 9-3 in the SUNYAC, while Fredonia falls to 9-15 and 2-10 in the conference.
Neither team recorded a hit until the top of the third. Sophomore Jake Quigley (Harrison, NY/Harrison) struck out the lead-off batter, and then Brady Firkins grounded out to senior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) at third base. Kyle Tedford hit a single and reached home on a Christian Cabrera single to take a 1-0 lead.
Oneonta responded in the bottom of the frame when senior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) singled in a run from freshman Joesph Monserrat to tie 1-1.
The offenses slowed until the sixth inning when Jacoby hit a two-RBI single to left field. Fredonia tacked on three runs in the seventh. AJ Gannon scored on a wild pitch, and Cabrera hit a single to bring in two runs and take a 4-3 lead. Senior Josh Martin came in to pitch and struck out the final batter of the seventh.
After going down an out in the ninth, freshman Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) singled to left field and reached second on a wild pitch. Senior Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) singled and stole second before senior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) walked to load the bases. Wurster came up to bat and knocked the ball to left field, allowing Dwyer and pinch runner Ryan Kuhn (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville) to earn the walk-off win.
Quigley went 6.0 innings with four hits, one run, and three strikeouts. Martin (1-0) went 2.2 innings with two hits, no runs, and two strikeouts.
